Introduction

An activity with an answer box test type is an activity where students are given items where answers are typically written inside a box area, such as identification, essay, programming, and math problem-solving.

In this segment, we will explore how to create an activity on an Answer Box test.


Steps

To create an activity with an Answer Box test type, there are two ways to add items:

a. Single item option

  1. On your class, under the Activities tab, click the + Create Activity > Create New. This will open a sidebar modal.

  2. Give your activity a name.

  3. Select which category the activity belongs to.

  4. Add a test by clicking the + icon, then select "Add new test".

You may also add tests and test items by uploading a PDF document by selecting "Upload test questionnaire".

  1. Select "Answer Box" as test type.

  2. Click the "Add" button. This will add a test labeled Test I.

  3. Under Test I, click the + icon to add an item. Select single item option.

  4. Fill out the question for this item.

  5. Select an expected answer type for this item. In GradeChum, we currently support 6 answer types:

a. Identification

For items with Identification as answer type:

  1. Provide at least one (1) answer key for the item by typing it on the provided field.

  1. If the item has two or more possible answers, you can add them by clicking the + Add answer key button at the bottom of the last answer key card.

  2. Select a strictness level for this item. Strictness levels determine how strict our system will be in checking the students' answers. To view the difference between the strictness levels in detail, simply click the What's the difference? text button on the right.

  1. Finally, set a score for this item. By default, this is set to 1 point. Once done, click Save.

b. Enumeration

For items with Enumeration as answer type:

  1. Provide the answer keys for the item by typing it on the provided field.

  2. To add an answer key, click the + Add answer key button at the bottom of the last answer key card.

  3. Select a strictness level for this item. Strictness levels determine how strict our system will be in checking the students' answers. To view the difference between the strictness levels in detail, simply click the What's the difference? text button on the right.

  4. Finally, set a score for this item. By default, this is set to 1 point. Once done, click Save.

c. Essay

For items with Essay as answer type:

  1. You may opt to include a key idea for your Essay question by clicking the + Add key idea. Otherwise, leave it blank.

  1. Then, select how you wish to add rubrics to the item. There are two ways to do so: a. Autogenerate with AI (recommended) - let our system automatically generate the rubrics for you using AI based on the question details you provided; recommended if you have no rubrics created for the item yet to save you time b. Create my own - provide your own rubrics; recommended if you have already created an existing rubric for the item


a. If the option chosen is Autogenerate with AI:

  1. Wait for our system to finish creating your rubrics.

  1. Review the rubrics to see if it is to your liking, especially the description and score for each rubric.

  1. If you wish to edit any detail to the rubrics, you can make your changes in the table by clicking the boxes and adding your modification.

  1. Then, select a strictness level for this item. Strictness levels determine how strict our system will be in checking the students' answers. Once done, click Save.


b. If the option chosen is Create my own:

  1. Fill in the name of the rubric and you may opt to Autogenerate with AI or Create my own for your description.

  2. You can add as many rubrics as you want by clicking on + Add new rubric at the bottom.

  3. Set a score for each rubric. You may see the total score for this item at the bottom right.

  4. Then, select a strictness level for this item. Strictness levels determine how strict our system will be in checking the students' answers. Once done, click Save.

d. Code on paper

For items with Code on paper as answer type:

  1. Select how you wish to add rubrics to the item. There are two ways to do so:

    1. Autogenerate with AI (recommended) - let our system automatically generate the rubrics for you using AI based on the question details you provided; recommended if you have no rubrics created for the item yet to save you time

    2. Create my own - provide your own rubrics; recommended if you have already created an existing rubric for the item


a. If the option chosen is Autogenerate with AI:

  1. Wait for our system to finish creating your rubrics.

  2. After creation, review the rubrics to see if it is to your liking, especially the description and score for each rubric.

  3. If you wish to edit any detail to the rubrics, you can make your changes in the table by clicking the boxes and adding your modification.

e. Problem-solving (without visuals)

For items with Problem-solving as checker:

  1. You may opt to include an answer key for your Problem-solving question by clicking the + Add answer key. Otherwise, leave it blank.

  2. Then, select how you wish to add rubrics to the item. There are two ways to do so:

    1. Autogenerate with AI (recommended) - let our system automatically generate the rubrics for you using AI based on the question details you provided; recommended if you have no rubrics created for the item yet to save you time

    2. Create my own - provide your own rubrics; recommended if you have already created an existing rubric for the item.


a. If the option chosen is Autogenerate with AI:

  1. Wait for our system to finish creating your rubrics.

  2. Once at least one key idea is provided, you can now add rubrics. Select how you wish to add rubrics to the item. There are two ways to do so:

    1. Autogenerate with AI (recommended) - let our system automatically generate the rubrics for you using AI based on the question details you provided; recommended if you have no rubrics created for the item yet to save you time

    2. Create my own - provide your own rubrics; recommended if you have already created an existing rubric for the item.


a. If the option chosen is Autogenerate with AI:

  1. Wait for our system to finish creating your rubrics.

  2. After creation, review the rubrics to see if it is to your liking, especially the description and score for each rubric.

  1. To add another single item, repeat steps 7-9.

  2. Once done, review the answer sheet layout on Step 4. For answer box items, you may change how big the portion dedicated for each item will be in the answer sheet by selecting from the size dropdown. You may also review what question that is by clicking the View question text button on the left.

  3. Then, click the "Create Activity" button. You will be shown an overlay that asks you to create sets for this activity.

  4. If you wish to create sets, follow this documentation. Else, click "No thanks".

  5. Finally, you will be redirected to view the activity you just created.

b. Item Group option

  1. On your class, under the Activities tab, click the + Create Activity > Create New. This will open a new page.

  2. Give your activity a name.

  3. Select which category the activity belongs to.

  4. Add a test by clicking the + icon, then select "Add new test".

You may also add tests and test items by uploading a PDF document by selecting "Upload test questionnaire".

  1. Select "Answer Box" as test type.

  2. Click the "Add" button. This will add a test labeled Test I.

  3. Under Test I, click the + icon to add an item. Select item group option.

  4. After choosing Item Group, fill in the Main question of the group.

  5. After filling in the question, click the + button to add a sub-item to the question. Then, fill in the question for the sub-item.

  6. Select an answer type for this item. In GradeChum, we currently support 5 answer types:

a. Identification

For items with Identification as answer type:

  1. Add as many sub-items as you need by clicking the Add sub-item button.

  2. To add another Item Group, repeat steps 7-11.

  3. Once done, review the answer sheet layout on Step 4. For answer box items, you may change how big the portion dedicated for each item will be in the answer sheet by selecting from the size dropdown. You may also review what question that is by clicking the View question text button on the left.

  4. Then, click the "Create Activity" button. You will be shown an overlay that asks you to create sets for this activity.

  5. If you wish to create sets, follow this documentation. Else, click "No thanks".

  6. Finally, you will be redirected to view the activity you just created.
